Hypertension & Diabetes Awareness Survey

In November 2025, Fety Medicaid Global Services Limited conducted a clinical outreach aimed at raising community awareness and assessing the prevalence of two major silent killer diseases—hypertension and diabetes mellitus.

Survey Overview

Location: Alimosho Local Government Area (Ipaja–Egbeda axis), Lagos
Target Group: Men and women aged 20–70 years
Total Participants: 300
- Male: 165 (45%)
- Female: 135 (55%)

Key Findings

Hypertension Prevalence

Men

25 out of 165 men recorded elevated blood pressure (≈15%).
Most affected were within the 35–45 years age range.
Blood pressure readings ranged from 140/90 mmHg to 190/100 mmHg.

Women

14 out of 135 women had elevated blood pressure (≈10%).
Blood pressure readings ranged from 140/90 mmHg to 195/110 mmHg.

Identified Risk Factors

Work-related stress among men, with little or no rest.
Lifestyle factors:
- Higher exposure among men to alcohol and cigarette consumption.
- Only about 2% of men had a sedentary lifestyle, mostly adults above 60 years.
- Approximately 3% of men were overweight or obese.
Women with elevated blood pressure were largely overweight and emotionally stressed.
Poor drug compliance among known hypertensive individuals contributed to about 5% of cases.
A small number of women (≈2%) developed hypertension during pregnancy or shortly after childbirth.

Conclusion

Women demonstrate higher awareness of hypertension compared to men.
Hypertension is more prevalent among men than women within the surveyed community.

Public Health Implication

The findings highlight the urgent need for continuous community education, routine blood pressure checks, lifestyle modification, and improved medication adherence—especially among men in their productive years. Early detection and preventive care remain critical in reducing the long-term burden of hypertension and related complications.
